When the Atari ST first appeared in 1985, the only compiler available for it was the Alcyon C compiler included with the Atari development kit. This compiler was slow and most people seemed to despise it.

It took a while for other C compilers to appear and before they did, another compiler appeared that started to get some traction: TDI Modula-2.

In addition to this there was Megamax Modula-2 (not released in the US) and perhaps others as well.

In fact, Modula-2 was still relevant in 1989 when STart added a Programming in Modula-2 column.
