At the dawn of the microcomputer era, there was not often a lot of software available and those that were interested in computers were also interested in programming them.
Nearly every early computer had some version of BASIC built-in for both of those reasons. BASIC being interpreted made it easier to fit into the small RAM of those first computers.
So it made sense when David H. Ahl of Creating Computing collected together a bunch of BASIC games (mostly from the mainframe/minicomputer era) into a book for microcomputer owners. This original book was called BASIC Computer Games. I had that book as a kid and remember trying to get its many games to work on my Atari 400 and 800XL. This book is and others are now freely available as David H. Ahl made them all available as public domain on June 15, 2022.
A sequel to BASIC Computer Games was published called More BASIC Computer Games (clever!). I was able to snag a copy of this on eBay a little while ago to add to my collection (I do love retro computer books). I have the red version with a 1979 copyright date. There is also a version with a yellow/orange cover that I’ve seen online as well.
