At the dawn of the microcomputer era, there was not often a lot of software available and those that were interested in computers were also interested in programming them. Nearly every early computer had some version of BASIC built-in for both of those reasons. BASIC being interpreted made it easier to fit into the small RAM of those first computers.
Although famous for those, David H. Ahl was also the founder of Creative Computing, a magazine that was launched in 1974 at about the same time as Byte.
