“I remember typing in programs from magazines and leaving the computer on for days so that I wouldn’t lose them.”…

Wow, reading that gave me a flashback to my days with an Atari 400 and no storage device as well. I left mine on for days as well.

I hated tapes. They were just so slow and unreliable.

Wow!! Same thing. Funny I got mine in 1982 when I was 13 (Atari 400 and eventually the 1010 recorder) and my mom, contemporaneously got me a subscription to Atari Magazine. Transcribing for hours, those programs from the magazine then trouble shooting when I made a mistake somewhere, then playing with the variable to change things in it. At the time my reading level was terrible. Then it shot through the roof with coding. In 1984 I got an Apple IIc. coded on that too and used it for all my reports etc. I took my IIc from Jr. High school, through my years in the USAF to my first year of college. Great times, great days. Kids don't do that stuff any longer. they're missing out. Incidentally, I have a 100% fully operational Apple IIc today, for nostalgia.

My first computer with the BASIC cartridge that I sold later on to buy a Commodore 64 🙂

I remember the excellent cartridge, Defender and the first game I typed from Computer and Videogames magazine (as I remember), a BASIC Frogger with some machine code (in Data) and that looked like the real arcade 🙂

I had Defender for my 600XL. Loved that game. Played the hell out of it in the arcade before getting in on the Atari. Asteroids and Missile Command were also my favs

Yes, I also played Defender and Missilei Command a lot in the arcades, Asteroids also but not my favorite.

I remember playing Missile Command also at home. I don't remember if with the Atari or the C64. Unfortunately today I don't have the game.
