“I remember typing in programs from magazines and leaving the computer on for days so that I wouldn’t lose them.”…

Wow, reading that gave me a flashback to my days with an Atari 400 and no storage device as well. I left mine on for days as well.

Wow!! Same thing. Funny I got mine in 1982 when I was 13 (Atari 400 and eventually the 1010 recorder) and my mom, contemporaneously got me a subscription to Atari Magazine. Transcribing for hours, those programs from the magazine then trouble shooting when I made a mistake somewhere, then playing with the variable to change things in it. At the time my reading level was terrible. Then it shot through the roof with coding. In 1984 I got an Apple IIc. coded on that too and used it for all my reports etc. I took my IIc from Jr. High school, through my years in the USAF to my first year of college. Great times, great days. Kids don't do that stuff any longer. they're missing out. Incidentally, I have a 100% fully operational Apple IIc today, for nostalgia.

Also Check this out. "Atari Age" magazines from the 80s PDF scanned
